Replace compressor Toyota pickup Sign In

The clutch on the AC compressor on my 94 Toyota pickup (4 cyl engine) is going out. I can replace the compressor but do not have the tools or gauges to replace the freon. Will it hurt anything if I replace the compressor and drier and just lightly attach the hoses back, do not turn it on and then take it to a shop to refill? Also, how do I know if it is a R12 or R134 system.

Understand that I mean no harm to you. This isn't for you as read between the lines. It used 134a when made new and a hygroscopic (means absorbs moisture which is in the air alone if allowed to enter the system) oil that if you leave open for any length of time will become acidic and slowly destroy the whole system if not handled properly.

If it still cools now I suggest you unplug a failing compressor so any debris is limited or halted from passing along thru the system. Then discuss an approach with a shop that deals with A/C and has the equipment required to do this right - once! You can discuss if there's some of the replacement parts you may be able to replace yourself at their agreement to do it that way or not.

The risk of messing up new parts by doing it wrong will far exceed any savings IMO.

If you really want to take this on do read up on the procedures and you will need to be able to measure amounts of oil from old parts and record that for the new parts + some then can go on to the vacuum and charge.

Equipment is rent-able to a point. If you buy everything for a one time job you'll lose your shirt - my suggestions - others may disagree,

T
