I have The same Problem! It isnt as severe but very annoying. I also have an 02 celica and the heat only works when the car is moving. Also my a/c does not work. it only seems to work when the setting is on deforst. Even then when i go to use defrost (hot or cold) it dosent really seem to clear it up, its almost makes it worse. i dont think it is the relay that everyone talks about becuase i dont get a flashing green light. i just get nothing. were is the thermostat located? Please some1 help me it would be greatly appriciated.

Separated your thread as it was tagged onto one near a year old. Each situation should be treated with it's exact symptoms.

Poor heat: Flush it out and new thermostat while you are doing that as it will flush better with it out anyway. Both heater hoses should be warm/hot as there should be abundant available hot coolant to work. Use 50/50 antifreeze mix and no more. More lowers heat transfer dramatically.

Not known to me but reported here many times that water pump impellers can be inadequate from corrosion, heater cores can clog up, and a bunch of things can cause poor heat.
********************

99% of thermostats are located at the engine end of upper radiator hose. Only use OE suggested temp. Remember that if you have A/C it is enabled when defrost is requested but heat should overcome any A/C activity if any depending on ambient temps.

Diverter door(s) and blend door may not be working properly and could be the door or the signal for where it should be.

Start with a good flush and new thermostat,

T

Cooling system provides the heat and A/C is separate really - so no to your question. A/C simply won't kick on below certain temps or pressure in the system which is VERY temp sensitive. It barely does squat to help with defrost/defog IMO in a narrow temp range. Plenty of vehicles don't have A/C at all and those functions work just fine.

There could be a blend door that isn't moving to your request also. Sorry for quick reply but I have to go for now,

T
