Re: REPLACE HEATER CORE Sign In

Wish I knew specifics but it's possible you do need to take "evaporator" out at the same time. This would mean recovering existing refrigerant for return later. Use new "O" rings as needed and Nylog or I like pure silicone grease for those. Just a smear!

They are a pill but doable with enough time and patience,

T

Hit back if you need help recharging A/C. It's posted here in good detail anyway at this section - subject line in all caps....

Re: REPLACE HEATER CORE Sign In

To add: Are you still with R-12 or swapped already to 134a? It matters! It's getting hard to find places to help with recovering R-12 and if you are already 134a just use new stuff and take contamination out of the game,

Re: REPLACE HEATER CORE Sign In

That was a evap core, I'll get the heater instr.

The heater core is much harder because the dash and console have to be removed.

  1. To avoid personal injury when servicing models equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Airbag) System, temporarily disarm system. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
  3. Remove instrument panel and center console.
  4. Remove heater case, Fig. 21.
  5. Remove heater core shroud screws, then separate heater case assembly.
  6. Remove core mounting strap, then the core.
  7. Reverse procedure to install.
  8. After completing service procedure activate Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Airbag) System. Refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.

Dash removal

  1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. Turn ignition to the Off position, then remove fuse No. 10 from fuse panel.
  4. Disconnect position assurance (CPA) and yellow two-way (SIR) harness connector at base of steering column.
  5. Remove shifter handle and seven shift gate trim plate attaching screws.
  6. Remove radio and A/C heater controller trim plate.
  7. Remove A/C heater controller attaching screws, then pull controller rearward and disconnect electrical connections, vacuum connections and remove heater control cable.
  8. Remove four radio retaining screws, then pull radio rearward and disconnect the power, speaker and antenna connectors.
  9. Disconnect all console electrical connectors.
  10. Remove six console hold down and two console to instrument panel screws and remove console.

  1. Remove instrument panel trim pad and hush panels, Figs. 154 through 157.
  2. Remove right and left lower instrument panel covers and trim plates, Figs. 158 and 159.
  3. Remove six instrument cluster attachment screws, then pull cluster back and disconnect speedometer cable and electrical connections.
  4. Remove headlight switch assembly.
  5. Lower the steering column, then remove five upper and six lower instrument panel carrier to cowl screws.
  6. Disconnect instrument panel electrical harness at bulkhead connector and under dash.
  7. Remove instrument panel carrier, Fig. 160.
  8. Reverse procedure to install.
  9. Reactivate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.

Re: REPLACE HEATER CORE Sign In

No, it doesn't appear that you will have to evacuate the refrigerant to remove the heater core.

Re: REPLACE HEATER CORE Sign In

You'll know as you get there. Legalities or not just be real careful as if you open a line it can freeze the skin right off you.

Unless you live in the hottest of climates switching to 134a will still work fine or find new R-12 which is out there but does cost more and is restricted to buy,

T
