Pressure question 1963 Corvair Sign In

I just got this car and it was almost empty. It had r12 fittings and I removed valve to be sure and it just release pressure about 3 seconds. I evacuated down to almost 30 and held for 1 hr good. I started charging with freeze 12@ 80*. Put in 3 cans and cooling very little High side 175 low 30, this shouldn't be enough since it is supposed to be 5lb of r12. I have no more freeze 12. This was yesterday. Anyway I notice 2 things, # 1 when I shut engine down it takes a long while to equalize and it never comes to with in 10 lb on High and low. #2 this morning @ 70* the pressure of the system is 110lb. Why would it be so high. gauges I assume are right. Although I use only 2 or 3 times a year they always appear right and I have 2 sets and both read the same. If I remember right the pressure should be about 70lb. not 110. BTW I have no idea what refrigerant was last used.

Re: Pressure question 1963 Corvair Sign In

Primal basics as I don't touch Freeze-12. Not much help for you but know that it takes less by weight known OE weight by quite a bit. Any condensable gas will have a pressure temp relationship. Warmer the higher and include engine temps making the area warmer than ambient just testing static pressure.

Look at a can. It may have it's own website for exacting procedures that do differ from either R-12 or R-134a - don't quote it but I recall it required liquid charging which is not something I would suggest to most with a running engine. About only thing I can say is by pressures you posted the compressor is compressing so that much is optimistic. Sorry for lack of my own know how with this gas. Another here may,

T

Thank you much. The 110 pressure @70* was after the car sat all night. I would think the engine and refrigerant and air temp would all be the same or at least almost. I did check their web site and r12, r134 and freeze 12 all had similar pressure temp.

I'm hoping another can chime in some direct know how with this gas. IDK what to expect with this one. Here's an example of 12+134a and that's to the mark such that if you know the temp you know the pressure and vs verse. There should be one for Freeze 12 also but don't have the chart or if it is so predictable.

I remember these cars new (old phart here) and a nice round # of them had A/C at all - ZERO. Strong guess is that even factory A/C with R-12 would be marginal at best with rear AIR cooled engine and hoses to condenser up front.

I wouldn't worry about your static pressure just yet. Best news is that some folks did switch to Freeze 12 and did get excellent performance but did have to be done properly. My fault for not knowing more about this gas and its properties. Not needed where I am at all - yet I should say.

Here's a nice chart showing what I'd like to find for this gas..........

When I can I'll look for info on this gas and how it may differ entirely. Please do post anything YOU find so we can stick it here as the gas is not unheard of at all just not popular in New England where I am,

Tom
