Re: "Possible" AC Condensor Leak Sign In

I just got off of the phone with my local ac shop and asked if the ac stop leak ruins the system, he said that there is a good chance that it is still good. He said as long as the compressor starts it will be alright. Which it does. He gave me a quote of $82.95 to flush the system, find the leak, and add one pound of refridgerant. He said since I gave them a general idea of where I feel it is leeking that they may be able to take some money off the top of it too. The only thing is if it is the condensor leaking, I would still have to pay extra to have them replace it. Does this sound about right to you guys.

Sounds like a guy just trying to drum up some business. If he tells you it's not worth messing with now, then he doesn't get any money from you. You are basically paying for an estimate because he isn't going to flush anything. He can't even recover that refrigerant into his machine because it will ruin it, yet the law requires him to.

So you are saying that I am paying for a extimate to find the leak? He won't flush it or anything, because he told me that the 82.95 covers the flush, diagnosis, and 1 lb of refidgerant.

And how are you going to know if he did it or not or if he did, how well?
You can't flush a compressor without removing it and evaporators don't flush very well. What is he going to flush it with. The correct solvent would cost him $20-$30 for that alone.
A/C is the hardest thing to repair and the easiest to fake you out on because you will never see the mistakes until it fails again and even then they will blame something else.

You can't even flush an evaporator on that design unless you remove the evaporator from the car. The expansion valve is bolted to the evaporator behind the dash inside the evaporator case. You can't flush properly with the valve in the way. If you going to have the evaporator and expansion valve out, you might as well replace them both.

This don't sound right.

Just to recover, dye, vacuum and recharge at our shop is $75.

Yes I know but $75 bucks! You are lucky to get a smile here for that!
No joke - starter homes are still 1M -- that down from 2M!
