No heat, cooling fans won't start up, Camry Sign In

I have a 92 Toyota Camry LE, 2.0L with 167,000 miles on it. About a month ago, I noticed while sitting at a stop light that there was smoke coming out of the front of my car. I pulled over and popped the hood to find orange fluid spraying out of a crack at the top of the radiator. It was a slow spray/drip, but it was hot as it was hitting parts of my car and smoking. I ordered a replacement radiator and learned how to put it in. I don't know ANYTHING about repairing cars so this was very new to me. I just got done replacing the radiator, everything is connected like it was on the old radiator, there are no leaks, and coolant is getting pulled into the radiator as I have filled it twice after running it for a while.

Here's the problem, I set my heat on high and air is coming out, but not hot. I revved the engine for a while and the cooling fans on the radiator aren't coming on at all. I took it for a short drive(not even a mile down the road) and the temp gauge on the dash rocketed to the red hot level. The car actually seems to run quieter than it did before and there's no smoke coming out of the front of the car anymore.

Could this be something really simple such as running the engine and keep putting coolant in the reservoir everytime it gets low until it stays steady? Or is this gonna be something where I have to pull the radiator out again and replace something else I don't have money for?

I have to move a good distance away at the end of this week and would like to use this car to help with the move, so the quicker the response, the better.

Thanks,

Matt

Dont continue to drive until issues are fixed you risk blowing a head gasket.. Also replace T-stat which is a cheap part.....

If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

As Alien said - don't drive it hot or allow it. May be too late for head and associated gaskets OR may still be low on coolant. Can take several cycles of warm ups, cool downs to stay, stable level. Heater not working is a clue of low coolant level or air/vapor being introduced constantly thru a bad gasket. Check level several times. If it won't stabilize check for why,

Thanks for the posts guys, I filled the radiator with coolant again and ran the car for a while. The temp gauge on the dash stays still in the middle, closer to cool. The heat is working now, but the AC doesn't work, I don't remember if it ever worked though. The radiator fans won't start at all, I replaced the fuses and still nothing. I'm hoping it's just the t-sensor since that's cheaper than new fans. Also, if I rev the engine for a while or take it for a small drive, I'll pop the hood when I get back and notice a small amount of smoke coming from the engine. Could the smoke be my oil burning, I need to get an oil change, but it's not low on oil. Again, thanks for the help and advice.

I think you may still have air in the system and have not bled all the air out yet.
You need to fill it up cold, cap it and run it up to operating temp and shut it off till it's completely cool and fill it again at the radiator. Repeat this process a couple of times until it doesn't take any more when cold.

You could have damage as these guys pointed out but rule out air first.

Re: No heat, cooling fans won't start up, Camry Sign In

Sorry if I missed something but let me try some for may bees of why what's happening and some easy tests:

Fans not working in a 92 Camry with A/C requested suggests a relay that just might be there for both. You can get a basic idea if fans will work by just turning them WITH A SMALL STICK NOT YOUR FINGERS and if they turn EVERYTHING OFF PLEASE! they probably are ok or can be forced with jumping but know exactly how to do that or get help to test them. Don't wast $$ on new stuff to find out that's not it.

Heater now working: That's a good sign for now. Keep checking level of coolant and monitoring temp. Why the regular fan(s) don't come on at whatever set temp is yet to be determined. Probably electrical either sensor for temp or the relay. A guess is that when return coolant is above 180F fans would be triggered. Just a guess though - some wait till higher temps and most shut off when driving along and airflow is adequate enough to cool, coolant.

Smoke still: Maybe because it really did get too hot some greasy junk slid down to a hot part like an exhaust part and it may quit it. If still a coolant leak or active oil leak it should leave evidence.

This is tough not being there and if testing things out is difficult for you I do suggest getting a pro to do the diagnosis as that cost could save you tons of time and tossing good parts. Then if you feel up to whatever the repair would be decide from there.

If temp is staying steadier now it may not be reaching the trigger line to run the fans. When just heated air hits a sensor it would be much slower to react than heated liquid.

For right now the heater working is a good sign. If it quits again don't wait and find out as expensive damage might still be preventable,

T
