Musty smell from A/C Sign In

I have a 2008 Chevy HHR and when I first turn on the A/C I get a musty smell. What would cause this and how do I fix it?

That is from mildew type growth on the evaporator from all the moisture. It could be easily cured if you could gain access to it but that is usually pretty difficult. There are some kits out there that spray a foam up through the drain hole which expands to cover the core and them melt off. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. If you can find a safe place to drill a hole in the plastic case near the evaporator without hitting it, you can use one of those bug spray cans with a wand and fill it with Lysol and spray it all over the core through the hole.

HT is right on with this - it can actually be normal depending on where you are and where you park the car the most. Mildew - same bull as with anywhere. Evaportor makes moisture naturally and should drip to ground but it isn't dry as a chip in there anytime fast. Pine needles, pollens or plant foliage leaves of small types can be the "food" that it will live in.

The basic idea is to kill the mold/mildew and it should stop or need periodic treatments if your situation causes it. Some will go away by simply spraying Lysol down intake vents, with air on for fresh air setting. Those intake vents are up near lower part of windshield near or around wipers at their base on almost all vehicles.

Don't know but if you have a cabin air filter for this do replace it and spray around in there too. Some may have easier access thru blower motor assy when removed but can't speak for this vehicle for that.

Good luck. You can control this and the very best would be up thru drain tube and bet that's real tight to find in this car,

This can be a disaster for some folks if bad enough and allergic to the mold/mildew.

There are a few approaches depending on severity of the problem up to and including totally dismatiling the distribution box to clean it all out at great expense,
