Issue with my Toyota Camry Sign In

I have a 1989 Toyota Camry LE 2.0 4 Cylinder with 226,000 miles on it. My heater hasn't worked for a while and I was wondering what the name of the part I need to fix it was. The part that is malfunctioning is the valve that opens and close when swithing from cold to hot to let heat in from the engine. I know the engine gets hot enough because every now and again the heat will work however it only works for a little while when it does. I don't know the name and the people at the advanced auto parts in my town aren't too bright it seems. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Issue with my Toyota Camry Sign In

Hmmm? Could be a clog or partially broken heater control valve as shown below......

Clearly looks like a cable controlled water valve and if you see this sucker underhood check that it moves with temp change request at all and feel before and after that item for temp.

At the age it could be in need of heater core flushing or replacement.

If you see this and take if off to inspect it be real careful of the hoses that go to the firewall as that's the necks of the heater core. Sacrifice hose and don't get aggressive to remove hoses especially there if you do that.

Could be other issues too but this is a possibility,

T
