Intermittent Heating/AC on '94 Corolla Sign In

Last winter I noticed the heat was cycling on my '94 Toyota Corolla. (Has 180,000 miles but I have no idea what engine size is-- probably whatever is the most popular/most standard). Heat seemed fairly normal about 70-80% of the time, but I got coolish air the other 20-30%.

Now having the same problem, in reverse, with the A/C-- intermittent, but get cold air only about 70-80% of the time. Only difference is that I sometimes hear 1-2 squeals when I first start up in hot weather. (I thought that might just be a belt.)

Am hoping it might be something simple (like a leaky hose) but have absolutely NO mechanical skills. Also am in need of replacing timing belt and exhaust system, could these things in any way be connected to the AC/heating problems?

Thanks for any possible suggestions--

Timing belt and exhaust need doing but I can't think of a way that is connected to the heat and A/C problem?

What might be is the temp blend door actuator isn't dependable. It's either vacuum or electrically actuated and I just don't know which.

That could give the same effect as you just asking for warmer or cooler air on purpose but I've never heard on one that didn't plain fail quickly and this one seems to be ongoing so needs some hands on inspection and hope it will both behave and misbehave when observed,

Thanks, appreciate your input. An engineer friend of mine thought it might be a thermostat problem, but it seems to me that if thermostat went out, it would be an all-or-nothing proposition-- either it's working or it's not.

Thanks again for your help--

Is the temp gauge staying steady when this happens? If so it's not the thermostat. If engine can once warmed up run too cool that would reduce the heat of course as well as if too hot can reduce heat but that's overheating when that happens and that would reduce A/C effectiveness but that if so is not good for the engine at all and should be addressed.

This is more likely a blend door control issue, blend door itself or the control head giving erroneous signals for temps requested,
