1992 Ford f150, the compressor has gone out and now makes a grinding noise. A friend said I could disengage the compressor so that the belt will continue to run on the pulley but will not turn the compressor shaft. Does anyone out there know how I can do this?

You could disconnect the connecter at the compressor or the connecter of the low pres cut off sw on the accumulator...

Exactly as Sidom said. I just want to stress doing this at once and tie the unplugged end out of harm's way - a wire tie should tolerate underhood heat.

If you ever want it to work again the sooner the better. It's a ONE minute job and if the clutch bearing is fine it's just a pulley and can stay that way,
