Hi. I live in Zimbabwe and right now the weather is burning the skin right of your bones!!

As I was driving yesterday, with the cool breeze of the AC whistling past my ears, suddenly, the breeze turned it into a hot wall of hellish fire! For no reason I cant get cold air!!!

The A/C light on the dashboard still lights up and I even hear the fans kick in when I press the button. This is leading me to think that maybe its something wrong with the refrigeration side of things because there is usually that click that comes every minute or so when you have the AC on but its now gone. And when I switch on the AC the rev meter increases slightly for about 3 seconds instead of the usual decrease in revs meaning that the computer side is fine as the car is compensating for the impending load of the A/C system.

I had a quick test for gas yesterday and the meter read fine.

So do any of you have any idea of what could be going on with the A/C because I'm hoping its not a major problem as I can only access a mechanic in about a weeks time!

Thank you.

If you checked for pressure even if just static, what was that #?

If high enough compressor should engage but a low charge would shut it down right away.

System will read roughly the same pressure in PSI as the temp in Fahrenheit with a couple ounces or a full charge. Don't add a thing but take that static pressure or report if compressor engages at all and we go from there,

Thanks for your reply.

I cant remember the pressure values. And the compressor doesn't engage at all since I dont hear that click sound thats usually there. So from what I understand is that if the gas pressure is low the reading may still be normal?...So how will the proper technician really check? And the A/C was cooling pretty fine until it died so is this just a safety feature?

Need more info to diagnose where to look on the web. By odds the charge is low due to a leak but don't do a thing or you stand to make it worse.

You can check the air gap of the clutch on compressor. .020 is a close standard and they won't engage at some point as wear makes that gap larger. If no measuring tools a folded (regular) business card should be a bit tight to get in that gap. Adjusting that takes some know how and hard to get at to do.

I know it's hot and too much is dangerous. Do you have help where you are anywhere nearby? Do you have access to proper equipment to start with? If not this just plain needs to be sent out to a shop that does this stuff.

This could be a dumb as a faulty relay too or a zillion things. If gap is good and you locate relay - tap on it with like the plastic end of a screwdriver - it might start working right away.

Sudden failures with any reasonable pressure left are usually and electrical problem or clutch gap as mentioned but there's lots to the system at large still. Takes tools, equipment and know how or this isn't DIY at all!
