Heater does not work after an hour, then works again if engine is switched off. '95 Nissan Quest Sign In

I have a 1995 Nissan Quest with 270K miles. Few days ago when we had a snow storm and I had to run the engine while stuck in traffic, after a while (1 hour) it gradually stopped blowing the hot air, as if the fan stopped working. Even when I turned it up to max, hardly any warm air came in.
Several months ago I noticed the same thing with the air conditioning system (then the cold air stopped coming in after 40-60 minutes).
When the car is parked for a couple of hours, then the heating and the AC work again, but after another 30 minutes, the whole thing is repeated.
I would be grateful for any suggestions as to what is the likely problem. Is it the fan? I have not taken it to a repair place, since it only happens after an hour of use, and not when I use it for less than an hour. Thank you for any suggestions.

That's lots of miles sport so lots of possibilities. Since it can happen for either A/C or heat requests I'd blame a sticking blend door, the actuator for it, or the control head for temp request has a problem.

Will be tough to diagnose unless it will do this in front of techs as of course it's hard when it's working properly in front of you. My best suggestion is to set up a tech (to be ready for you) and go get it to fail and go right in while it's happening and get it checked out while doing it or it's going to be difficult to diagnose,

Many thanks for your suggestions. I will certainly do that and tell the mechanic about your suggestions. I also checked several previous posts about not working fan-motors in this forum after I posted my question, and will check that fan motor and the wires going to it during the weekend. Thank you again for the quick reply. I really appreciate it!

Forgive me - I read a ton of posts and just noticed with your comment now that the FAN isn't blowing. That should be much easier to figure out even yourself. Find the body of the motor - can't help with exactly where but most are exposed. Bring a sturdy screwdriver or plastic hammer and give it a whack when it quits. It may just start working right in front of you which is about as clear as it gets that it needs a new blower motor.

If it doesn't, it's not conclusive. Check the wire to it, usually one and how it's grounded either a wire or strap of some sort. If either of those have the trouble than go there.

If dead while testing it will be fairly easy to figure out. It's awful hard to find what's wrong when everything is working - drives anyone nuts and trust me you have to be nuts to do this crap for a living as it doesn't always show itself or work out right the first time. Ever hear of mechanics turning tools into projectiles? That's whyWink

Again, many thanks for your prompt and very helpful reply, I really really appreciate it! It is actually very humbling for me to see that people like yourself and your moderator colleagues spend so much time just to help others without any financial benefit. I posted this problem on the Nissan Quest forum last year and on Edmunds.com recently - no one offered any advice.
Most of the time I use the car in question on short trips, but next week I will take it to a longer trip and then do those "diagnostics" you mentioned. I will certainly update you as to what I find. Best wishes, and thank you again!

Boone,

We are all volunteers and those who are moderator are usually VERY experience or going on senile like meCrazy Some own their own shops or come here as they can. ANYONE is welcome to offer suggestions. Absolute is having the car in front of you. It still works and a lot of stuff get found and fixed thru this medium.

I'd bet of the regulars of the time being you have a few hundred years of hands on experience. If you don't love doing this work or didn't (retired) it wasn't for you as it's PITA. Like a friend once said it's like banging your head against the wall. It feels so good when you stop! Enjoy the site with some improvements coming hopefully,

T
