Front fan motor quit Sign In

96 GMC K1500 Suburban
5.7 v8
156,000 M

A week ago the front fan motor quit blowing. Relay, fuse and wiring seem ok. I've measured the voltage at the fan motor - 12v for all speed settings Except High - High measures 0v.
What next?

Thanks. Ted

?? You are talking about the blower motor right? No action and you get voltage? Gotta guess - make sure it has ground then I might be blaming the speed request knob,

1st we'll try a couple of very high tech tests.....

1. Turn the key on, put the motor on medium and rap it gently with a hammer handle...(If the motor comes on, then it has a dead short)

2. It that didn't work, with it still on, on the med setting measure the voltage at both terminals ( power & ground sides) and see what you get

Re: Front fan motor quit Sign In

I'm guessing 2 things have happened here. I suspect you started with a bad motor and Sidom has given you some good suggestions there.
Now, as far as your voltage findings, I think your jumping to conclusions about the relay being OK. The bad motor would have overloaded the circuit. High speed power only happens when that relay is energized. The other speeds get power with the relay at rest so check the 50amp maxi fuse #3 in the underhood relay center. If that is good, then either the relay or the blower switch is bad too.

Re: Front fan motor quit Sign In

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the quick responses.

After the father's day get together I'll get out and take a look at it again and try the hammer handle test.
I didn't measure from ground - I measured wire to wire - I'll measure to check for ground.
50 amp fuse was good, I bought a replacement relay already - no difference.
Do you guys recommend a motor replacement - I usually try to get my stuff from Napa....

Thanks again, Ted

You probably have a bad motor but that's not the reason you have no power on high setting. If you are checking power between the 2 wires at the motor, then you already checked the ground. Change the motor and then you'll have to deal with high speed. I would try to stay with Delco brand on the motor.
