Ford Ranger Heat Always On! Sign In

I have a:

1997 Ford Ranger 3.0L

The Heat stays on no matter where the temperature control switch is set (so if I turn the turn the temp switch to cold and put the other dial on AC the heat just stays on as if nothing has changed).

At first I heard a faint clicking sound when I turned the temp dial to AC. It made me think that maybe there is a small motor in there that is burned out???

I read this post on the forum...

Quote
The heat in that vehicle is controlled by a blend door that regulates heated air flow. it is operated by an electric motor/actuator. The problem can be that the actuator is stripped or inoperative or the door itself could be damaged. This is what needs to be determined by examining the actuator and see if it is responding to heat change commands or not.

Is this is the problem??? If so what/where is the actuator and how hard would it be to fix/replace it???

Awesome! Thanks for the pic!

Since you agree that it's the actuator I looked around and found this video on replacing one

...so seems pretty easy

Thanks!

Nobody said you're problem was for sure the actuator. It's possible but could also be a problem with the control head that operates it or the blend door itself could be broken or jammed. I agree with the original advice you quoted since i was the one that originally wrote it anyway.
It's not complicated to change the actuator. The problem can be accessing it. Most are not readily accessible.

You're right it was the blend door.

I took out the actulator and it worked fine...then I realized the blend door axle was cracked.

To take the heater box out would have taken a lot of labor and money ($600-$1000 for a mechanic to do it)

I looked at buying a heatertreater door for $130

But then I came across this article!

It took me about 1 hr to adjust and bend the pin so that it fit tight against the broken post in order to open and shut the blend door fully.

This may not last me as long as a full fix, but it sure does beat $130 or $600 for that matter.

I deleted your other thread you started with that link. We do not allow links in responses and there is no need to duplicate a response. That repair may last a while but will likely not be permanent. I have seen it done before.
