Ford A/C Help Needed!

Ok i have a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport with a 4.0 SOHC V6.....a month ago the weather was about 60 degrees out and it was starting to get warm so i figured i would make sure the A/C works....it was a little low on refrigerant so i topped it off and it was ice cold and a few weeks later i go to turn it on when it was warm out and it blows warm air....the refrigerant is full and the clutch is engaging....please help me!

How did you determine it was low at 60 degrees and then how did you decide it was at proper level? You pretty much can't tell when it's that cold!

If you used one of those color gauges it's only useful at exactly 80F and only if all other things are operating normally, with a raised idle, windows open, and A/C request on max. If that type gauge toss it now as most aren't accurate when things are all right.

In that the compressor is staying engaged it has something in the system but could be way too much which won't cool.

If you added anything but pure 134a refrigerant with no other ingredients that opens a "Pandora's box" of possible problems now. Find out what you added and how much was listed and let's see if we can do some damage control,

when i checked the refrigerant again it was 90 degrees outside....thats not cold.....and all i added was R134 refrigerant it does have a slow leak.....needs to be recharged about once a year or so....and when you go to charge it , it isnt that low....just not ice cold....i dont know if the actual compressor is ok but the clutch on it is engaging....the accumulator isnt cold or wet from condensation

Ok: Do you know what the pressure were before you added? What are they now - it's doing something so info is there waiting to tell you.

Over time it isn't so unusual to leak some refrigerant - you just never know when something that seemed predictable becomes a fast leak.

Now on a 90F day with compressor staying engaged the accumulator is not cool, cold or sweaty it suggests it's low on refrigerant again or has real trouble exchanging heat at the condenser meaning fan, fan clutch etc aren't working or working well.

Pressures are mandatory - both high and low now. You don't know how low it was when you started do you?

Here's the trouble possible. If it was low enough to allow a leak to draw air into the system and now system is screwed. Do you bleed air out of whatever hose hook up you use? It can handle that a couple times then too much air makes it's own problems. Air doesn't condense (liquify) till some mega thousands of psi of pressure and the kicker is it has moisture in it too which ices things up inside system, make oils acidic - the begininging of "game over" or frightful bucks needed.

That link shows a gauge set for just $75 bucks delivered to the US. That's what you need now - a real gauge set and let's diagnose this before adding anything now. I've seen only one set cheaper (bought em myself for parts for other sets) if price is an issue but didn't read #s into vacuum - check for that when you get gauges or we are stuck again. Stuff is rentable to get you thru this.

Funny - been cold here with a real heat wave 95-100 highs expected for a few days now and millions of New Englander's will find out fast if their A/C's are working - supposed to go right from cold to hot in no time starting today!
