Does the compressed air through the heater core in reverse trick work? Any other tricks I could try, or should I just replace it?

I think water has the chance to work better and watch what comes out if anything. Follow up with air probably won't hurt but don't overdo it or you'll blow it with too much pressure with either,

Are you for sure the heater core is plugged? If so, just water. The clog will normally come out first, then run water through til it comes out clear, keep running it for a few seconds, don't blow air in there...it's a 96, lord knows how corroded that thing can be, hate to blow a chunk out.

Make sure you bleed the coolant.
