1996 Ford Explorer 6 Cyl. 4.0

Yesterday, my heater control valve broke. One of the fittings the hose slips over broke off. I bought a new HCV and replaced the broken one. Today, I got in the car to go to work and it took about 5 minutes before the temp gauge needle moved. When uit did, it shot straight to the "H" position. Also, no heat working at this time, just cold air. Turned around and headed home. A few moments later, the needle came down a bit, enough so that the "check engine light" went out. Hot air came out for a minute or so, than went cold again. Was there something I was supposed to do when I changed out the HCV? Did something else maybe break due to the HCV breaking?
Thanks for any help

I would start by checking the coolant level. You might of had an air pocket the worked its way out, after replacing the valve.

I flushed it out and re-filled it and that took care of the problem. Thanks
