Divorced Mom of 4 - NO air flow from vents!! HELP Sign In

2001 Mercury Villager Van ~ 6 cyl ~ Has A/C ~ Front blower motor ~ 160,000 miles
Blower motor issues for a couple months. Could bang on motor housing under dash and would kick in a little bit. Finally died. Replaced blower motor. Still no airflow through any of the vents, dash, or feet. When switching the fan speed control you can hear blower motor speed increase/decrease but no air flow. If you place your hand over dash vent you are able to feel heat, so I don't think it is the temp control. I can't afford to take it to a shop to get fixed. Any ideas, it 32 degrees and looking at 6-8 inches of snow in two days?

OK: If I read this properly the blower motor quit and was replaced - now works (makes noise) but isn't blowing air - right?

What can happen is that it spins backwards! Either the squirrel cage (that's what they usually use for the fan) is on backwards somehow or the motor is wired to spin the opposite direction. They sometimes are available in different polarities which will make them turn in opposite for intended direction and goes unnoticed till you really use it. Need to be checked that it spins the correct way is my guess on this for now,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have much air flow before installing the new blower motor. You could not tell the difference from low to high. Sorry about not specifiying that. I watched them hook up the blower motor and there was only one two prong connector. How would we check to see if it is spinning the right way? One of the guys at my work said something today about a door that might be stuck? Aren't car problems grand!!Crazy

Just a generic reference pic of a blower with squirrel cage which doesn't always come with a replacement motor and some can be put on backwards and fins make noise but not much airflow.

**************

It was my understanding that the blower didn't blow air at all to end up with a replacement. Some air will flow thru from driving along but not much.

If you hear the blower motor working and changing speeds too but little to no air flow it's either that cage is backwards, motor polarity is backwards (who knows why??) OR as you mentioned a duct is stopping the show.... AKA diverter door etc. They tend not to shut tight so much as direct what air is blown to the wrong places OR temp isn't right - both controlled by these diverter doors.

In that the first problem was no blower if that's so then I just don't suspect a door broken at the same time but of course it's possible.

Also - if it was loaded with critter chips or leaves (junk of any kind) inside there it all has to be cleaned out. Mice, chipmonks, and things like to make nests and can cause problems that are strange. That would have been noticed I would think with the blower motor being replaced.

I'm not sure how to explain which way it should turn except from hearing ones that were wrong knew that unique sound. The blades of the cage just won't blow air if spinning backwards but do spin away happily!

It may have to come out to see - not sure as I'm not there. Cage may be marked with letters "out" or an arrow to match up.

I'm not going to suggest to you how to reverse the polarity for a test with the one wire as you need to know body of the motor is not or is grounded and how to reverse that is unique to each test so you would just see if that cage was reversable at all OR find out if they ever made motors that spun the opposite way. They do for different reasons. Some cars made for either right or left hand drive may make a mirror image of all dash parts - stuff like that happens.

You are right on target by saying "Aren't car problems grand" -- we must all be nuts to actually want to do this stuff!
