Damage to my toyota corolla tranny by mechanic--help

Hello I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla w/1.8L and 3 sp +overdrive tranny. I took it to a man who advertised on craigslist to have a new cv shaft and ball joint installed. He acted like he knew what he was doing but when I drove away from the rented place he used on some farm the car made grinding noises. I took it back to him TWICE before I went out the lane but he told me it would 'work itself out' as the shaft was new. Well, it did not and my car lost fluid very quickly as I drove it. I added fluid but it just went out. I figured the seal was shot so I took it to another craigslist 'mechanic and he put in a new seal but it still leaked. I bought a new cv shaft and had him put it in as well since he said maybe it was a bad part. Still leaked when I drove it. Oh, btw, the original "15 yr exp." mechanic who worked on my car turned off his cell phone and refused to answer my emails even though I was trying to be nice about things.. No support...just how it goes I guess.... I then took it to a garage and the man there told me the shaft had too much play and it was because the first mechanic had somehow damaged the internal part of the transmission and there was too much play in the shaft now...hence, the oil leakage around the seal on the tranny case. Is there anyway that unit can be repaired or am I simply going to need another tranny to replace the one I have? I already have a tranny lined up at a yard but it would seem there would be a way to replace a part on the tranny in the car rather than replace the entire unit as the splines obviously line up-===just it has play and has sheared off the abs sender and so forth (hence the grinding noise---the cv shaft works fine as it is but it loses a LOT of fluid) Thanks all! Im new here and hope I have posted this properly ......feeling let down here in Lancaster County Pa.

Hello, question, why did you have the axle replaced the first time? Do you know if in fact the seal was damaged? when the fluid leaking when you took it to the 2nd mechanic Did it have a leak originally? Is everything ok now just a leak? Gary

Hello, question, why did you have the axle replaced the first time? ---- Hi Gary I had it replaced since it was leaking from the boot (just grease) and I felt it was best to get it done rather than wait till it went out.....was clicking a little bit when I turned the wheel.... too Typical sign of a cv joint going bad ----- Do you know if in fact the seal was damaged? when the fluid leaking when you took it to the 2nd mechanic ---- NO, but I wanted to replace it in case since it WAS leaking...didn't realize it was leaking till it started shifting abrubtly and threw me against the windshield at a light on the way from the first mechanic! .... I had a new cv shaft put on as well so I also now have a spare new cv shaft as well ...but there was damage to the abs sensor (hence the girniding noise I heard when I drove away from the shop of the first mechanic....had him listen and drive it too...said it would "work itself out since it was new" He knew better, Im sure The shaft would not latch inside the tranny properly as the mechanic damaged it inside there.....it was fine before and NEVER leaked a bit! ---------------- Did it have a leak originally? HECK no! It worked FINE except for the grease around the boot...it was grease...not transmission fluid and it wasn't all over the bottom of the chassis as it was later after the work -------------- Is everything ok now just a leak? ----------- It worked fine except when the fluid leaked out...I just kept topping it up every single trip I made and before I went home and it would work ok for short trips.....till enough fluid flowed out to make it shift poorly. I was looking for someone to help me find a way to obviate the need to buy another transmission and have it installed...that was my request It seemed like if I could open it from the bottom and drill and put in a roll pin in to hold the cv shaft in properly within the shaft on the tranny it would not leak and I could save a lot of money (may be stupid idea I know...Im not an auto mechanic per se) However, I just went and bought a tranny from a yard and a lot of different seals and so on and fluids and things and had another mechanic install it Works find now and the new mechanic I found seems to be a wonderful chap and very knowledgeable I don't know if Im allowed to name names but I would like to give him kudos as it works so fine again...I try to take good care of my car and was appalled on how the hillbilly so-called craigslist mechanic treated my car. I should have stopped him right after he did the ball joint on the other side of my car as he remarked that he rebuilt his dodge truck engine then had to redo it again a few months later....but out of courtesy and restraint didn't say anything.... -- Oh well....live and learn but it was an expensive lesson on being more careful and to avoid most craigslist mechanics I suppose but I like to give the little guy and the up and comer types a chance and usually I save a bit of money as well. I found my new mechanic on there but he actually has a shop with signage and also projects an appearance of a decent honest person and seems to know a lot about autos unlike the southern Lancaster county 'hillbilly type I took it to the first time....but I didn't know till I got there and then I didn't want to be rude...my bad :) Benny

Hi Discreet signals Yeah, I wouldn't doubt it and he really didn't have a shop but a place he rented in the boonies in my county...seems him and his pals all use the building to tinker.... but he had the experience profile in craigslist and if I had seen him or knew him before I got to the place and in to the bay I think I would have passed. I sure as heck wish I had now! He only had an email contact initially and didn't want to give out his phone number easily and now I can see the reason. Also, he darn well knew he damaged it and after doing it he took his ad out of craigslist and he wont answer his phone or emails at all even though I was simply trying to reach him. I am a bit pissed as this whole experience was costly and I was out my car for a while and also just the hassle of it all...as well as expense....sheesh Take er easy... Benny Anyone need a perfectly good left side new, not rebuilt cv shaft for toy. corolla....as I have an extra now..heheh ?

Benny, Once this axle started leaking, if the mechanics bought seals from the parts store, and not the toyota dealer that was probably the reason why it still leaked. I had a similar problem at my shop, after overhauling a transmission in a 92 toyota, the car came back a few days later with an axle seal leak, so i ordered another seal, installed it and customer picked up the car, few days later brought it back same thing, at this point i bought a seal from toyota and that solved my problem. Glad to hear that its fixed and thanks for letting us know. Gary
