Cooling System Freeze/Boil Protection Chart Sign In

NOTE: EG (ETHYLENE GLYCOL - MOST COMMON PRODUCT) DOES LITTLE TO RAISE BOILING POINTS! THE CHART SHOWS A 15PSI PRESSURE CAP WHICH ACCOUNTS FOR 3 degrees per PSI SO NOTICE THAT THE PRODUCT ITSELF IS ONLY WORTH 8 degrees IN INCREASED BOILING POINT OVER THE KNOWN 212F AT SEA LEVEL.

NOTE II: ANTI-FREEZE IS A LOUSY COOLANT IN THAT IT DOES NOT TRANSFER HEAT AS WELL AS WATER ALONE BUT IS CRITICAL FOR ANTI-CORROSION PROPERTIES AND MORE IN HOT WEATHER. MORE THAN A 50/50 MIX IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE AND PLACES THEY WOULD LIKELY BE.

Note III: IN HEAVY LOAD CONDITIONS SUCH AS TRAILER TOWING FOR EXTENDED TRIPS OR MOUNTAIN DRIVING WITH A LOAD YOU'LL FIND LOWERING CONCENTRATION TO TO PERHAPS -20 IS STILL PROTECTED AND GIVES A HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT. TO MY UNDERSTANDING THE MIX OF -20 STILL WON'T CRACK ANYTHING (NO PROMISES) BUT WILL BE SLUSHY AND NOT MOVE WELL IF YOU LEAVE IT THERE FOR A WINTER THAT GETS COLDER. WATER EXPANDS WHEN FROZEN, THE MIX MAY NOT CIRCULATE BUT CONTRACTS. GUESS - LOWERING CONCENTRATION CAN PROVIDE ABOUT 5-10% ADVANTAGE OF HEAT TRANSFER BUT SHOULD BE CHANGED MORE OFTEN FOR CORROSION PROTECTION IF YOU DO THAT. ALSO - DON'T TRUST EVERY TESTER! GET TWO TO READ REAL CLOSE - I'VE FOUND MANY NEW THAT WERE DANGEROUSLY WRONG!

What bugs me is they stopped putting that on containers on most nowMad This was needed by me earlier today to guess what the new anti-freeze protection would be in a car that was diluted with just water by one quart. With a little math you could figure it out from that chart as I always did.

Also wanted to tell folks that when changing anti-freeze to know the system's total capacity and add exactly 1/2 that in concentrate first as there's always some water left in the engine after flushing unless you drain the block with those plugs too.

I must have been dropped as a baby - who would pay attention to such minute details? Cool

Steve,

I didn't write that chart BTW. "how am I doing" -- I'm still breathing so I guess that's good! Smile,

Do stop by as you can - appreciate it!

I got so tired of those inaccurate floating ball testers that I bought a refractometer. Best $50 I ever gave NAPA. Faster too. It can do ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and battery acid specific gravity.

Find total system capacity and hope you knew where you started. It's shocking but one quart of just water can make a huge difference to the freeze protection level as seen in that chart.

If you started at 50/50 and were sure of it than in almost all situations you would be fine. Especially if added to a recovery tank it will take several cycles of warm ups to full cool downs for the new reading to be accurate. As said, the dang testers need testing with knowns as so many are plain wrong.

When using a floating device, balls or a marked bar or pointer allow it to fill full as you can a few times. Flick those with your finger to get bubbles off of floating item(s) and wait for the actual reading.

Pay strict attention to this and mark (tire markers on something underhood) with protection level and when checked and changed last as a constant reminder. Tire crayon markings will remove with carb or brake cleaner on a rag when and if desired,
