Compressor running NO cold air 99 Buick Sign In

My a/c was not blowing cold air so I took it to a shop. They said they charged it up and shows installing 2 units of R134. It worked after they did that but just did not seem to get as cold and I think it should but still it was cold.

That was on 7/1/08. Today it stopped blowing cold air again.

Here is the particulars: 99 Buick LaSabre Custom with only 61,000 miles. The car had set up about 1 to 2 years without being driven before I bought it. It worked fine up until it stopped cooling.

1. The compressor is running and NOT cycling off as it would if the freon was low or high.
2. The line coming off the dryer is cold and sweating. This line sweats on down for about 2 to 3 feet then it is not cold.
3. There is water running out of the car on the ground so this appears to me that the compressor is cooling.

Does this line I am talking about from the dryer where it connects to another line have a filter that could be stopped up?

I am completely ignorant when it comes to car air conditioners.

The one good thing is the work that the shop did carries a 90 day warranty so maybe I want be out another 140.00.

Thanks,
Tom M

Re: Compressor running NO cold air 99 Buick Sign In

Ok: It's making cool as noted by condensate (water) and sweating return line but you just aren't getting it in the car. A or B. Either the heater is fighting with it or the divertor door for temp control isn't moving properly.

Things to try: Try asking for heat then return to asking for coolest. Try max and norm requests.

Look at heater hoses on way to firewall under hood. The cooling system ones, one may have a heater control to shut off hot coolant when A/C is requested (didn't find one listed) but look.

AYOR if you want - try pinching off a heater hose and see if cooling is restored - just temporary for test and know that hosed aren't fond of being pinched like that.

When the shop listed a charge for "units" it means nothing to me. I couldn't guess how they charge for what amount that means. It would be nice to know how much it took to make it work then but at the moment that's not it, IMO.

Cooling at vents may not seem cool depending on conditions and still produce condensate. Please take a real output temp at center vent and a best guess or measure of ambient temp. With no cooling effect at all vents are higher than ambient temps. If lower at all, cooling is going on and the "gas" part of the system is probably functioning ok with whatever faults still need attention.

You may end up needing help with the repair but would be nice to close in on what area is the problem.

A maybe with this is critter may have taken residence in car left sitting for a couple years and made some nest stuff in the way of the diverter doors. I think the doors are electrically actuated behind glovebox and some will make a grinding noise when heat/cool request is switched with stripped gear. Some of those easier than others to fix if so,
