Check engine + constant heat in 97 Ford Ranger Sign In

1997 Ford Ranger, 102,488 mi: I am getting heat from HVAC in all settings except max ac and a consistently lower temperature setting (right around C) on my gauge. This has happened the past few days. Also, when I turn the fan to off, coolant begins to leak from behind the right front wheel - I can't pinpoint where.

Today a check engine light engine light came on. . I have not flushed the radiator for over 4 years.

I replaced the thermostat two years ago with a similar issue except the temperature on the gauge went up to the max! Now it is being held steady near cold.

The first thing you need to do is stop driving it before you have a much bigger problem. It sounds like you may have a leaking heater core but you certainly have some type of coolant leak that needs immediate attention. You need to pressure test the system to find the leak and repair it.

Hmm, new development. I fiddled with the knobs - there were clunking sounds, then no sounds, then all of a sudden the cool air came on. After driving a while (about 5 miles) the check engine light went out. I know this isn't permanently fixed, but in the short term, I will not touch any controls and see what happens. The temp gauge is still in the lower quarter versus in the middle. And I suspect there is some type of leak or pressure release that should be checked?

None of that is going to change the fact that you are losing coolant and that is going to lead to overheating problems and likely engine damage.

You may have an electrical issue with the blower too but that has nothing to do with coolant loss.

Why would it leak only when I turn the AC/Heat unit off?

That has no bearing on it.
