Can't connect to low pressure service port on 96 Ford Taurus Sign In

1996
Ford
Taurus
3.0 V6

No A/C cooling happening. Blower working fine. Thought I'd try picking up a can of R-134a from Autozone and adding some refrigerant to the system to see if that did the trick. Picked up a can that came with guage and hose (reusable) with it. Started up the car, turned A/C to max and attempted to hookup the hose to the low-pressure side port. I removed the port cap but COULD NOT get the pnumatic-like hose to attach to the port. Couldn't really tell if it was attached?? At one point I thought it was on and then twisted the tap screw at the top of the can to release the refigerant, but the hose popped off??
Needless to say, it didn't go well after that. It looks to me like low pressure service port has some threads on it, yet the quick-release style just didn't seem to stay on. I've either got the wrong type hose, or am simply missing something here. If the hose attaches correctly, it shouldn't pop off with a slight tug I wouldn't think. Can any advise me as to what to do. simply trying to add some additional refigerant to the car to see if this improves the cooling. It's for my 17yr kid, so I don't want to put a lot of money into the repair. I realize their may be a leak in the system somewhere, but I'm ok with just trying to add refigerent to see it does the trick.

Thanks!
Joe

Take that kit back and get gauges or let someone do this at the risk of mega thousands if you don't do this right. You don't even know if it needs a charge, boost or other repair yet.

Too low is NG and too high is NG and niether will cool properly - it's needs to be correct and with an agorithym of all info and items operating properly, temps, RPMs all observed at once to know your are in the right area of charge.

Those one hose gauge on can things contain junk almost always that can destroy the system so beware! Can they work - yes. Can they cost you thousands in extra expense - YES!

Read the link above in this section titled "Charging procedures" and if you can't take all those observations you need to get the stuff or just let it go a a shop the does A/C,

T
