Air Conditioning backfiring noise Sign In

Hi
I have a 2000 Nissan Altima 4 cylinder with 112,000 gentle miles. A couple months ago I noticed an intermittent noise that sounded like a chirpy- psst sound coming from the exhaust system. Since then have noticed it only happens when the air conditioning is on. Any ideas what this might be would be welcome. It's one of those things that if I take it to a garage and the mechanic will do a test drive, it won't happen til he leaves the car:):)

Do you hear it from inside the vehicle or outside the vehicle?

Does it make the noise when the vehicle isn't moving?

Pretty impossible to diagnose a noise over the Internet. could be a belt, tensioner, A? comprtessor or about a dozen other possibilities. It really needs to be checked out more thoroughly by a tech.

I can hear it inside the vehicle with radio off. I don't think it's ever happened when the vehicle is stopped.

Funny you mention belt because when I start the car with a/c on there seems to be a squeak that I don't remember being there. I had the serpentine belt replaced a few months back. Do you think there's any connection? I will probably have to take it in to be looked at but I'm just trying to get a little knowledge before I go in.

I'd take it back to the guy that did the belt and tell him it's making noise. Let him prove otherwise.
