Air Conditioner making noise when stopped

 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5Z A/C makes terrible noise when stopped in gear, stops after I commence driving! What could this be? Could it cause more problems? 69,000 miles on vehicle

You are calling it a terrible noise so it isn't anything normal. Is this noise the compressor itself as best you can tell?
See if belt is tight enough and in good shape. Just a glance at idle if it looks like it's struggling this needs attention at once. It may not be the compressor itself but another pulley under stress as the compressor is quite a load and other items may suffer from that. You would check that by taking belt off and spinning each pulley for feel.
If never a new belt on this it's about certainly time for one. Go for quality. If compressor is making noises and everything else checks out it needs fast attention as if it seized you could be a pedestrian real quick with a load of other problems it could cause too,
