AC retrofit freon line filters

Are the AC in-line retro fit filters a good idea or another place for a leak?
Do they all require a line to be cut to fit or do they come in other fashions?
Are the filters to be installed as one on the high pressure side and one on the low pressure side?

I never liked using them. The concern is not the leak, it's that they will get plugged up and cause a restriction.
