AC on 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sign In

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee and a couple of days ago my air conditioning pump started making a bad whining, growling noise. I suspect the pump was fried and today as I drove home, it was smoking a bit. My mechanic said it was driveable, but now I don't think I should. He stated I needed almost $400 in parts, such as condensor, pump and other parts. He spoke of a kit to fix including air pump. My question is can just the pump be replaced. It was sending out cool air and seemed to still have freon in it. I know for sure the pump is gone and needs replacing. Do I need to replace other parts too?

To tell you the truth, those numbers sound way too low. If the compressor tore up, then it likely took the condenser with it. It will also need an orifice tube and an accumulator along with evacuate and recharge. That's generally about $1,000 to $1,300 with labor.

Apparently the compressor is not bad. The pulley needs replacing. I spoke with a mechanic friend of mine. The wheel turns, but it sits cock-eyed now, thus making the noise. My friend recommends just replacing the front pulley/bearing on it. What are your thoughts? It was still blowing cold air.

Re: AC on 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sign In

I don't agree that for a number of reasons.

  1. The clutch failed for a reason and most of the time the reason is the compressor building up too much pressure causing the clutch to slip. It could also be starting to seize. If that is the case, the new one will fail also along with the rest of the compressor.
  2. When that clutch failed it transferred extreme heat to the compressor and the front seal is right there and made of rubber so the heat usually triggers a new leak.
  3. If any of these things are true, then you are going to then have to buy a compressor with a clutch already on it so you wasted the whole first repair.
Don't get me wrong. I have seen it work but the odds are against you. When we make a repair, we can't afford to take chances like that. Also, if you do buy a compressor, stay away from re manufactured units. They have an extremely high failure rate. They sell some very reasonably priced generic brand new units. Make sure the condenser is flushed also.
