AC line leaks Sign In

I have a 2005 Ford Focus that has a leak in one of the metal AC lines in the passenger side front fender underneath the headlight. The two lines cross over one another and the contact friction has caused a hole in smaller upper line. The lower line in connected to the Accumulator and the friction point is almost directly above it. Can I cut this upper line and put a compression fitting in the middle of the line? If not, it looks like this smaller line runs up and into the fender towards the firewall. Probably have to remove the fender to replace the whole line?

Yes, it can be done but you have to be very careful to get a good seal as that is a high pressure line and even a smal leak will cause refrigerant loss.

As said tricky at best and high pressure gas will leak even if checked with lower pressure air. Check locally for a full service A/C shop for repair or you may find it's not that expensive to get a new one. Cut some rubber heater hose if they are too close in that spot and or pipe insulation so it just doesn't do that again.

That crap can happen with ATF cooling lines, PS lines and other stuff - I use a lot of cut rubber hose as protection when seen in a car for that.

The metal is alloy or should be. Note a magnet won't stick to it.
Takes special skill to make that not leak with "heliarching" (sp?) which is aluminum welding,
