A/C works only sometimes? Sign In

I have a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and the A/C sometimes works and sometimes does not. After its been sitting overnight or somewhere for a long period of time, it will work for about 10 minutes before the compressor clutch/pulley disengages and the cooling stops. Sometimes during acceleration or going a steady 50-70 mph will cause cold air again until stopped at a red light or something. Once stopped at a red light, I have a 50/50 chance of the compressor kicking in again, or just blowing warm air. The inconsistency of this problem makes it harder for me to judge what the problem is. I have already checked that there is adequate power to the compressor's clutch mechanism, and felt the high and low pressure lines for temperature differences to detect if I have too low of freon. How would I check my compressor to know if it has gone bad?

This might be related, but sometimes I hear water sloshing around by my blower when I take turns.

Sorry for the novel, and thanks in advance for your time!

-Nate

Hi Nate. BTW - I hold the record on writing "novels" !

This might be pretty simple as it can blow cold air. What I think the issue is, is the clutch gap is excessive and at assorted temps (right at the clutch) it may or may not engage even with power applied.

Clutch gap really shouldn't exceed .020" but don't go nuts looking for a gauge - just find an ordinary business card and fold it tighly. It should be real snug when folded or not able to get into the clutch air gap which can be adjusted.

Duh - check that with engine off please!

If when running and A/C is requested WHEN the clutch won't engage try just tapping on the outer plate with a rubber something as it probably will snap to and stay operating until the next normal cycle. This is supposed to cycle as needed to prevent ice ups or to disable system if charge is too low OR weather is too cold for safe operation.

Try this stuff first as a test and we can take it from there. It likely is up for a boost by age alone but don't go there just yet.

1993 was a scewball year for A/C This could be either an original R-12 (Freon) system, converted, or an original R-134a system and will need to know that later if more is needed.

You don't need to mess with the refrigerant to adjust a clutch air gap,

T
