Got my compressor out ... where does old oil drain from? and where to add new oil? I'm sure I know but want to make sure from someone more familiar...

also on accumulator, manual say drain old oil (from where?) and remove schrader valve to add new oil...this sound right or a better way to do this.... Thanx, RandyCool

Re: A/C compreesor change out Sign In

Measuring remaining oil is far from an exact science. Most of us just use a general rule of thumb to determine how much oil to add. When changing a compressor, I add 4 ounces to the compressor and 2 more into the accumulator, assuming your changing that also. If your changing a condenser also, add 2 more ounces.

There are a number of ways to add it. When changing a compressor, it's easy to just pout it into the ports before installing it. Once everything is back together, the best way is to just draw it in through the low side hose while under vacuum.

Be sure to rotate the compressor at least ten times after installing and before starting to purge it back out of the compressor so it doesn't damage the compressor when it engages.

Thanks Hammer, I should be more specific in my post. I did change out the accumulator but have not put any oil in it yet. On the accumulator, do you remove the valve stem (shcrader valve) and pour it in there? I get conflicting stories from auto parts people...but don't rely on their knowledge too much...
Also , draining the old oil from the old compressor, How do you do this? and then to add the new , just pour it into both ports? Thanx, RandyCool

Is this a "new" compressor?

Did it come with oil in it already?

Then there won't be any oil to drain out. If you haven't installed it yet, just pour it into the port. If it's already installed, then you woill have to draw it into the low side with a vacuum during evacuation.

There is no need to drain the old one.

Your going to have to draw the remainder of oil in with vacuum now. I don't know what your planning on using for equipment for recharge but there are a number of ways to draw it in. Most charging stations have a means of adding oil built in. If you use gauges, you can just dip the feed hose in the oil and open the low valve while the system is still under vacuum.

Re: A/C compreesor change out Sign In

I have not installed the new compressor yet, I am going to do that in just a few minutes. So I should add 4 oz oil to the new compressor before installing it right? Now as far as the accumulator goes, I have installed the accumulator but did not add any oil to it yet, should I add oil to it and if so where, ..remove valve and pour in there or just wait til I have the system charged. I am going to have pro shop charge the system, I was just installing all parts to save lots of $$$.....times are tough..
I had the system evacuated before i started and will let them charge when I'm finished... Thanx for all your help, RandyCool

You have the system recovered, not evacuated.

Juxt add the 4 ounces to the compressor and tell the shop to add 2 more during evacuation, no big deal.

Re: A/C compreesor change out Sign In

Now let me ask another question please.. I just removed the protective plate from new comp and about 1-1 1/2 oz of oil came out.. On the box that it was shipped in it had a big red label stating that this compressor shipped without oil, add oil before installing. Are they always shipped with a little oil in them?? Thanx, RandyCool

That should be assembly lube.
