A/C Issues - 2 failed compressors Give up? Sign In

2004 Honda Pilot - 183000 miles

I am stuck in a bad situation. Please offer any advice possible.

My AC compressor failed about 18 months ago - it was smoking and making a loud noise.

I paid my cousin (young mechanic working at dealership - 23 years old) to replace the compressor.

I watched him do it and fetched him tools, etc. I am not much of a mechanic. ;-)

He released the refrigerant when he removed the compressor. I heard it!

He replaced it and since winter was approaching. I did not have it charged for 6 months.

I took to a garage to charge and the mechanic said it took forever to pull a vacuum - like 45 minutes.

He charged it and it the A/C worked for about 24 hours.

I took it back 2 or 3 more times and he replaced different lines and it kept failing after 1 day or so each time.

He could not find a leak with the dye.

I gave up on it for that summer. Now we are a year later and I tried taking it to two new places.

The first place charged me $50 to tell me the compressor was bad at a minimum.

I proceeded to pay another friend to replace the compressor and receiver dryer this time. I was told it would have a lifetime warranty by doing this.

I took it back to the garage to attempt the charge again. I was told either the compressor is bad again or the there is a clog in the system.

I decided to take it to a third garage. I was now told the compressor is likely bad (1 week old) and there is a clog that needs to be flushed out of the system and the condenser should be replaced along with the receiver dryer. They said it will be around $1000 for parts/labor.

I am being told the compressor can’t be warrantied because debris most likely destroyed it. Does this make sense even though we replaced the receiver drier?

Should I give up? I don’t know who to trust!

Thanks for reading.

That makes complete sense. We see this all the time when someone thinks AC repair is easy for a DIYer and they couldn't be further from the truth. It doesn't sound like the people you are bringing it to are specialists in this area either. The guy that said the condenser needed to be changed was probably the closest to accurate. I'm sure the system is totally contaminated by now and no one has even come close to finding the original reason for the first failure of the compressor. Until the original reason for the failure is found, it will continue to fail and cause more damage every time it does.

So, everyone agrees the system is contaminated. Does that indicate the new compressor is bad as well? If so, is the warranty void as well? Even though the receiver drier was replaced?

We can't tell you what the situation is from here, only what's possible.
