A/C Header or compressor RPM switch? Sign In

Hello again on my 1998 Honda Accord a mechanic just told me that the reason the A/C is going off while driving down the road (blower still running) is that it is either the A/C header or the compressor rpm switch..but there is noway to know unless he can catch it doing it at the time.
He also said that if the light is flashing on and off that can tell him alot....not sure if it is.
Can anyone tell me if there is some simple way to find out and does either repair cost alot?
Thank you

That's like listening for a noise when the noise isn't present. There is no way to diagnose a problem that isn't there. By "A/C header" you mean "Control Head". He is right, it could be either one of those things and they are both common.

I don't have any exact figures but you have at least a few hundred dollars either way. The control head could be more.

Who said anything about a compressor? The RPM sensor is located on the compressor but sold separately. The system would have to be evacuated and recharged for that.

Man the story keeps changing......

1st it's a 2000 and the fan doesn't work when the problem is happening! Now it's a 98 and the fan does work??

I think the best idea at this point would be to take it to an A/C shop and let them fix it for you........

Bandit3,
Anyone who really understands how to fix any type of system in a car knows the engineers make things look easy. What you don't understand yet is that the info you supply is important if you want help. I see these guys trying to understand and help you with your question but I don't think they have enough to work with. As for cost, thats relative. Most of my customers seem to think a/c is expensive, if they want accurate information and dependable repairs. I think your friend should go to a junk yard and replace any suspect component, that would be the cheapest.
