post locked   A/C Compressor is bad

Year of vehicle--2006
Make of vehicle (Pontiac)
Model of vehicle ( grand prix)
Engine size (3.1)
Mileage/Kilometers 107,000

I brought my car into the shop because my ac has not worked for a year now. I was told it is the compressor. The compressor works but is shooting out too much freon on the high end. They told me that to replace the compressor I also need to replace other parts and to sum it up it is going to cost $1528. I want to know if I replace the compressor do I really need to replace the other parts? or just the the evacuation to make sure all moisture is out.

Thanks for any advice!

Too much pressure is not caused by a bad compressor, however it will ruin a good one. A/C repairs always involve multiple components and if not done correctly, you will be doing the entire job over again with even more things ruined. Just make sure these people are well experienced in A/C repair because everybody thinks they are an A/C tech but very few really are.

I didn't know there was a way to measure refrigerant flow unless your an engineer.

Sorry I meant the high pressure is over working. So, does the entire ac need to be replaced?

A compressor won't cause higher than normal high side pressure. It is usually something such as an air flow problem through the condenser, restriction in the condenser, air in the system, or an overcharge of refrigerant.

Like HT stated, excessive high side pressure will overheat the compressor and cause catastrophic failure.

Ok so when I brought it in they filled it full if Freon and already is out. They told me no leak. Could they be wrong?

Of course it's wrong. It's a sealed system. If the refrigerant disappears, it has a leak. No question whatsoever. It sounds like you need to try a different shop.

Yes, I think you'll need help with this. It shouldn't be "shooting" out gas and normally should shut down with excessive pressures usually caused by overcharging a system or perhaps somewhere somebody put a sealer in it messing up entire system.

Right now I'd disable it so it can't work, break a belt and make this a nightmare worse than it is already,
