post locked   A/C Clutch Fuse Keeps Blowing

About a month ago i replace my entire Ac system in my 93 honda accord, hoses, compressor, condensor, evaporator etc. Its been working wonderfully for the past month, but two days ago the a/c clutch fuse blew. I replaced it and the next day it blew again. It seems that the fuse blows more so in warmer weather. I have tested it at night when its much cooler, and it doesnt seem to have the problem. Sometimes it blows as soon as i turn on the ac, but sometimes itll blow after 10-20 minutes of driving.
Any advice would be appreciated

Sounds like you have a problem with the new compressor clutch. Try unplugging it and see if the fuse stops blowing.

So if the fuse still blows, then its another issue if not then its the clutch? Could it be the field coil? Seems to blow in warmer weather, maybe an overheating issue?

The field coil IS the clutch.

Could it be a problem possible with improper airflow through the condenser and radiator causing the compressor to pull more amps

Do as Hammer Time suggested. That will lead to if it is or isn't directly clutch (the coil) related or not. It's NOT the condenser doing that,

Stop trying to overthink this. Either it draws too much current or it doesn't.

Definetly the coil. Now it seems that every time the fuse blows the field coil seems to come loose and starts trying to move with the pulley. I believe i figured out the issue, be cause i jamed a piece of rubber behind the coil to keep it from moving, and it has not blown a fuse yet. When i have a chance i am going to remove the compressor and replace the clutch.

I hope you own a recovery machine if you are doing all these repairs yourself.

You did WHAT!
About all set ups look like this.........
Attempt #4. Try this link to pics of assorted clutch coils and set ups........
http://www.bing.com/...coil&FORM=HDRSC2

Better pic didn't show. Coil is in that pic.... NOPE not showing or expiring on me?
^^^^ Pic was there?
Coil doesn't move the outer plate get magnetically pulled in by coil which is mounted behind it. I don't have clue what you were doing with some rubber thing to stop it from moving!

A compressor is just a pulley when disengaged and when engaged is compressing gas so it works.

If you screwed all that up this is yours now. Takes a puller and then the coil could be accessed but not yet. Why is anything wrong, this is all new?
If your tricks shorted the coil you'll see it with just an OHM meter. Go just to the two prongs the clutch assemble is wired to and by OHMs that's the coil - everything off it should read about 3.5 > 4.5 OHMs. Higher could and should blow a fuse.

Have to suggest you only test it, remove whatever the heck you did and probably broke something that was operating as designed but can't know that and let a shop do this too as it takes tools and setting the air gap for the clutch and don't think this is something you should be doing but doable if just that wrecked. Let the shop/tech decide not just tell them what to fix but what you notice,

i know what the coil is and how it works. I know its supposed to stay still, however it is jolting to the side about an 8th of an inch on the shaft. Almost like the coil on it is to big. I know i installed everything correctly. When the fuses started blowing, i noticed this issue, and performed a temporary fix which, fuses have stopped blowing since there fore the rubber i put in there has temporarily fixed the issue. I dont know why that the coil is moving and causing fuses to blow, thats why im here trying to get some clarification

OK, OK - You said this was all new a month ago so it's all warranty stuff now or should be.
I'll never find a picture that show a bearing for the clutch which can be bad new which can quit making noise or symptoms when compressor is engaged then it's bushings of the compressor's shaft turning not the bearing at all -- either way seeing it move means it's ready right now to strand you over it.

What no doubt happens is the coil you can't see has damage to it and with some heat shorts hard and blows the fuse. That isn't going to last.

I highly suggest you quit driving this unless compressor is on it's own single belt only take that off it buys some time on only some set ups.

Warranty stuff. If you allow the clutch to fall off and it sure seems it will it's near impossible for that without outright damage with junk flying around and probably one belt runs everything so you can't drive it that way.

Worst case it throw junk at radiator, other parts up to parts right thru the hood! Not worth tricks - it's gotta go now for new as you just replaced it and hope it's only a compressor with ready clutch together deal not done separately or compressor used old clutch,

Know exactly what is going on now, it was a defective field coil. All parts under warranty, and murray is supplying me with a replacement clutch. Should have everything fixed by the end of next weeks. Thanks for the help!Smile

Just to refresh the field coil is a winding that sits still all the time and isn't causing the wobble you notice. If clutch failed very well could take it out so the whole unit complete is the fix.

Still know that now really suggests the bearing of the clutch is the source fault and driving or even running this you are taking chances and AYOR with that already suggested not to drive it that way.

Best of luck with just that and a speedy fix,

Tom

Murray reman compressors = cheap junk. They do make good boat anchors though.

Now you just need to pray every night that the reman compressor holds together for another day. They are as unreliable as the weather.
