Over the past few weeks I've experienced a problem with the a/c on my '99 Voyager where it intermittently stops blowing cold air. When it happened the first time, I took it to a local oil & lube place and had the a/c serviced. The mechanic reported that everything checked out, the pressures were good and the air coming out of the vents was 60 degrees which was "okay." The mechanic attributed the problem to it being an older vehicle and that "sometimes there were flat spots" where the a/c wouldn't turn on but that kind of excuse doesn't make sense to even a non-mechanical person like me. The A/C worked for a few days and then on a recent trip in 105 degree Texas heat it stopped working and started recirculating the warm air. The car doesn't overheat and when I stop, turn off the car and let it sit for a while, the a/c works fine. There is a normal amount of condensate on the ground when the car is sitting. I am scheduled to take it to a new mechanic on Friday but I wanted to see if anyone had ideas on what it might be. My husband thinks it's a thermosensor but we can't find anything about that sensor in the Chilton's book.

Any ideas????

The problem here is that no matter what the problem with an A/C system is, the result is always the same so it can be many different possibilities. It needs to be examined during the failure so the tech can determine whether the compressor is running at the time and then determine the reason for it by following the wiring diagram and testing various points in the circuit.

In light of about 65% of A/C complaints of lack of cooling being low charge that's what I'll blame this on. 60F vent temp is too high depending on how checked. 105F ambient is plenty for sure and it working well most would give you low 50sF at least.

Lots of observation need be made when it's down! This may be icing up or another issue. Low charges can cause premature cooling and the ice won't behave but leave a good puddle for you when you stop and may work again for a while. Hard to say and lots to check,

I think the vent temp really depends on whether this is a dual system or not. If this is dual system, 60 degrees is not that far off norm at idle. If this symptom is a complete hot and cold difference, then it has to be intermittent compressor operation or a problem with a temp blend door.

I would expect a low charge problem to somewhat follow the outside temp and be a problem on the hotter days only.

Hammer - so glad you are here with warm/humid climate know how. Already said in this thread is an estimated 105F ambient! The real ambient is what the car is taking in thru its grille and if if traffic or over hot pavement it could be much hotter than that! If the case 60F outputs while idling would be in the norms just as Hammer said.

Laugh - the two days a year I'm at a traffic light and it's near 100F out I just put the car in neutral and allow some extra RPMS and they cool right off if all is well with the system...........

I've done a lot of those dual systems and the rear unit robs a lot of the compressor suction and raises the suction pressure, especially if the rear blower is on. You sacrifice some temp for the higher BTUs.
