I have a 3.1 L 99 Buick Century with about 150k miles. My heat wasn't working this winter but I never worried too much about it since my trips were very short to work (5-10 miles). One day my car heated all the way up and I had to stop the car before it got into the red. So I checked the radiator fluid (after it cooled of course) and it was grimy with a brownish tint. Flushed it and used prestone radiator flush and ran it for 10 minutes. Car worked great, heat was working great too. Now after about 2k miles my radiator fluid is grimy again (sort of slushy looking this time), my heat only works while I am moving, and even my oil cap has a little grime on it. Not good. What are some thoughts and the possible damage to my tiny checkbook? Thanks

Getting a cooling system completely clean once it's sludged up is nearly impossible. It hardens like mud and every time you flush it you taker a layer off but in a little while some more loosens up and it's dirty again About the only thing you can do is continue to flush it out at regular intervals using some chemical. Remove the thermostat during the flushing to get better flow and more of the gunk out. I have seen people use some muriatic acid to flush but you would have to be very careful and be sure to get every bit of it flushed out. You're probably going to have some new leak problems show up under all that sludge when you finally get it removed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
