98 pontiac sunfire, blower will not blow, make wierd noise Sign In

Well, I made quite an embarrassing mistake last night. I got up around 1 a.m. to start up my car, to ensure easy starting in the morning. ( negative temps out) I went back inside to wait about 10 minutes to warm it up, with intentions of going back out to shut it off, Instead, I accidentally fell asleep. Leaving my car running until early this morning, about 6 straight hours.

After I started it last night, I had the blower motor turned up to Full, High, and the heat all the way up, when I went out this morning. It was still on high, but no air was coming out. I smacked the dash, and a tiny bit came out. I shut my car off hoping the blower was just overheated or something. Went back inside. When i went outside now. The car had a really hard time starting ( never had that before) Finally got it started, and the blower wasn't working. I smacked the dash hard, and it worked on full just like new. Decided to let it run again for about 10 minutes, so I went inside. When I went back out the blower isn't blowing anymore, and I can't get it too. When I change blow style on the knob, it makes sort of a weird noise. No blowing at all.

My question is, what am I looking at here? new blower motor? a short? How can I fix this... I don't really know much about this kind of thing at all.

Also, Since it was running for about 6 hours straight , just sitting. Should I be checking for any other damages? if so, where and what?

I really appreciate the help guys!

Thanks!

Ok: Believe it or not letting it idle for 6 hours really shouldn't have caused any permanant problems but don't do that all the time of course. That's so long as engine was ok, didn't overheat unwatched or anything.

It basically sounds like you need a blower motor. When they will respond to a tap (better if right on the housing) and behave for a while or make noises as said at lower fan speed it's near certain.

So - plan on replacing the blower motor and take the car for a good run to kinda "blow it out" for the engine after such a long idle it would be good for it,

I've been reading up on other sites, and they also recommend taking it out to " blow it out" , I will be doing that soon here. My first thought was it's the motor also. Seeing as how I had the fan on high for about 6 straight hours, no doubt it blew. I will be getting a new one here soon, and replacing it.

And no, the engine never overheated since i've had the car. Never had any problems. But as I said, I had an really tough time starting the car after it's long idle. I read somewhere that after a long idle, some kind of deposits could be left in the exhaust/lines or something along that area. Could that be the reason why I had a tough time?

Heading out now to take it for a good run, then change the blower motors. Thanks for the advice Tom!

I've posted here a few times before about the same car, always gotten helpful answers. I sure appreciate it!

Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words Mike.

To add: You didn't really blow that motor. It should be able to run for ions on high and there's no real known life expectancy for them and no repair or maintenance for them. You just get a new one.

The extended idle just isn't what an engine was designed to do. They like a variety and it should just snap out of that.

Good luck with the fix. If you are doing this yourself we can see what we can find for info - some are fairly easy some not,

Ok, 4 hours, 8 very scraped up knuckles, and a few very awkwardly twisted body parts later, I am done! Successfully replaced the blower motor, now its blowing like a charm. Only thing is, I could only get 2 of the housing screws in, there are 3. The last one is just too far back, with not enough space for me to fit my ratchet in. Hopefully i'll be ok with just 2 screws holding up the motor/house.

Thanks a ton tom for your input! Can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

I'm sure I'll be back for more sometime in the future Wink

Save that bolt for later installation. This pic isn't like being there but if you got it out there are cool tools to put it back in. I'm done with the being bent up, cut, burned, scraped, crap in eyes and wearing band-aids like a new fashion statement! Hey - no pain no gain or something like that.

I have used "1/4 drive wobble headed 1" extensions, a cable like extension, universal jointed sockets, and a really neat carb adjusting tool the hold 1/4" sockets to re-install the tough ones."

Wobble extension.....

Those allow 15 degrees angle - two 1'' length end to end gives amazing around an obstacle ability with force!

Snap On - Carb adjusting tool........

(one of the two pics should show??)

Exact pup above the 1/4 drive end turns - hard to see in this pic as you turn the other end's knurled knob.

If you carefully tape bolts, screws etc to the socket needed that helps too and the magnetic ones I don't tend to use much of.

~~~~~~~~~~~
You will probably be fine with three for a while but plan on getting the last one back in. When they used 5 for mounting, 4 of them was usually permanent.
Good luck with it. Glad it worked and you could do it. It will look a lot better to go back there when it's warmer and perhaps see better if you can do this outdoors too. I can't see for poo anyway up close so love it for outdoor full daylight. Dang drop light burns are like tattoos @#$% - you know what I meanMad
