98 Ford Taurus no heat Sign In

98 Ford Taurus Wagon 3.0 6 cyl auto

I did not have any heat. This started 2 years ago. mechanic said I had a leak in head gasket and exhaust gas was air binding core. Used as summer car for last 2 years, dont have 2 grand for had gasket repair.
Tried something called "steelseal" as a temp fix for head gasket. did steal seal procedure after talking to their tech line a few time and doing compression test on cylenders to detirmine which cylender gasket had leak. Also replaced Thermostat. I am thinking steel seal worked as car seams to have more power and not blowing out white smoke but still no heat. Neither in and out hoses to heater core are hot. Hose from engine to top of radiator gets hot when engine reaches temp. Hoses to overflow tank get hot right away as well as overflow tank. What do you suggest as next step?
thanks in advance for our time

They should outlaw gimmicks like that. All it will accomplish is plugging up the rest of the cooling and heating system. you can pretty much forget getting heat now with that stuff in the system.

Well I have to admit I had the same gut response as HT after reading about putting a "stop leak" additive in. I googled it and the product doesn't look as bad as some of the conventional stop leak produces being it's clear with no particles.

Going off what you posted, it really does sound like your heater core may be restricted. You could take off both hoses and see if you can run water or blow air thru the core. If the core is clear, with the supply hose disconnected, put it in a bucket and start the car to see water is coming out of it. Also check the return hose to make sure it isn't restricted.

Those are also bad about the water pump impellers being eaten off by cavitation. No impellers, no coolant flow, no heat.

Re: 98 Ford Taurus no heat Sign In

the tech line for steel seal seamed pretty knowlegable. Since my problem was more emission gas getting into coolant they had me do compression test on all cylenders. Then when I located cyl with low compression they had me disconnect that plug and injector. Then put chemical in radiator and bring to temp and cool completely several times to force chemical into gasket that was leaking. they say chem will not harden in coolant but who knows.
I had nothing to loose and all to gain if it worked.

Pump is only 3 years old but will check flow on Friday and see what I get. Is there any way to know if pump is pumping.

I was trying to find a flow diagram to make sure I understand direction fluid is traveling in all hoses but could not locate one in my chilton book.

I also noticed it takes a long time for engine to reach temp. Drove about 30 minutes before it reached op temp. Just replaced thermostat so I know that is working.

Normally there is a tube off the water pump, that would be your supply hose. Personally it really sounds like the core is plugged. It is possible there is a restriction on one of the hoses but you really don't see that to much.

I've also seen worn or loose impellers as W2O mentioned but you usually have an overheating problem as well with that condition. Just because the T stat is new doesn't necessarily mean it's good.... I've seen those bad right out of the box as well but usually it's a sticking closed condition causing an overheat not open causing a slow warm up......

Brief read and have to go: - Sealers for leaks can easily clog heater cores! Never use the whole bottle! If a tad doesn't work for a small issue the real repair is needed, IMO,

Re: 98 Ford Taurus no heat update Sign In

Well heater core was plugged, firstt ried water then air finally blew out a whole bunch of "Gunk"

used small pump to circulate simple green through core to clean it out more.

Noticed two things , first I have heat. Only drove once so need to see if it plugs again.
2nd car warmed up faster. Although I think the car was always warming up at normal pace but sensor for temp is located on hose coming out of heater core just before it enters engine so if core was plugged sensor did not have proper flow so it took longer to register temp.
Will keep all posted to see what happens over next few weeks.
thanks for your help.
Have to go wash "Gunk" out of hair

Isn't that the one that sits in the center of the firewall and the whole dashboard has to come out in order to change it? No thanks!

I'd torch the car if mine as it requires major dash work! If still working ( I'm not) that a nasty repair on that car!

Pretty much..... It's in the hvac box and the dash has to come out to get the box out. You can actually just pull out the right side of the dash enough to get at the box to get it out.......I'm just getting to old to be standing on my head & bending like that anymore...........LMAO

Re: 98 Ford Taurus no heat update Sign In

I bought a Taurus wagon w/ a bad engine for the daughter. While the engine was out, I bought a heater core, thinking it would be a good time to r&r. I still have that heater core! Still in the box!
