I have no heat in my 4 runner. I was getting some heat on low fan enough to defrost and a little cabin heat. A few years ago I had a ruptured line going to the rear seat heater so I cut the lines out of the loop under the hood by connecting with a hose and capping the outlet connections. I have been loosing good heat ever since. I had topped off the coolant this fall and have replaced the t-stat. Still no luck. I then flushed the heater core till the water ran clean. (Only did it in one direction though). When I replaced the thermostat today I noticed a sizeable build up of sluge like material in the end of the lower radiator hose at the end by the thermostat. There was also build up on the thermostat itself. I have checked the cables controls on the cabin heater and took off the valve, that is in the line before the heater core, to check to see of it opens and shuts. That all seems fine. The heat gage holds in the middle after warming up the car and holds there. What should I try next?

Two things I'd do:

1. Flush out cooling system completely and main heater core both ways. This time I'll suggest a flushing agent whereas usually I would avoid them - you have signs that it could help or uncover a problem right away.

2. When you plugged off the rear heat - however you did that exactly you claim from then on heat was compremised. When bypassing a heater it's always best to make a loop of the core instead of plugging off hoses as that leaves a dead end of coolant and messes with the engineering of the flow for the whole operation. Bypass is ok - plugging off is not!

Note: Try not to exceed 50% mixture of antifreeze and water. Higher concentrations will not exchange heat as well as the universally suggested 50/50 or lower % as conditions permit - in this case stay 50/50.......
