96 Suburban Rear A/C not cooling Sign In

The A/C in the front blows very cold, but the air from the rear vents is hot.

Since there is only one compressor, is there a separate cutoff valve for the rear evaperator ?

Thanks.

Rear is TXV (thermo expansion valve)

Make sure settings and requests are in line. Rare for rear to quit first - total loss of value of vehicle if it's really messed up except for a non A/C vehicle. Plugging off rear possible. Front not working is then it's own diagnosis,

Tom is right here. You most likely have a bad expansion valve in the rear assuming your blower is still working fine. It's not a real big deal to repair it but I would be careful to try to determine what caused it and make sure there isn't some kind of debri in the system clogging it up.

Thanks to you and Hammer Time for your quick response. The fan in the rear is working properly and the selector is working properly.

Where is the expansion valve?

Thanks, again,

It's a bit of a job to access. It's inside the rear housing which is behind the right rear trim panel. You will have to remove the rear seats and then the trim panels to access the housing. the system will have to be evacuated and the housing opened up.

Before diving into this project though, make absolutely sure that the temperature blend door is not stuck in the heat position. Feel the temp of the larg line coming out of the evap. If it's cold, look into this deeper before taking it apart.

This job is a total nightmare!

Measure twice cut once is the saying that comes to brain dead mind. Cut the rear off unless really needed. You only have "X" # of BTUs available from the ONE compressor. It's basically just splitting the bounty no more.

Unseen by me so far but plugs are now available to disable the rear. Trust me - the third seat passengers won't like it!

If you decide you want to live without the rear, you don't really have to do anything. You have a built in restriction now so it amounts to the same thing as plugging it off.
