95 GMC Yukon AC recharge question Sign In

I have a question regarding my 95 GMC Yukon I am hoping someone can help me with. I recently turned the AC on for the first time since last summer and discovered it was only blowing hot air. I opened the hood and saw that the compressor was cycling on and off in about 3-4 second increments. I read online that this is a common syptom of having low pressure and needing to recharge the system. I bought a kit at the store with a pressure gauge and hooked it up to the low pressure side (the only side it will fit/measure). The instructions say to measure the presure while the ac is running on high. The problem is that the compressor keeps cycling on and off! So when the compressor is off the gauge showed the pressure on the low side, but still okay...I went ahead and added freon so it showed up as full. However when the compressor kicks on the gauge drops all the way down and shows almost no pressure at all. What is the accurate reading, with the compressor on or off?? My AC is still blowing hot air but I am afraid to add anymore freon since I see warnings everywhere to not overfill. If it seems the system is full, any suggestions on something else I can try before I giveup and take it to the shop? Thanks!

David

I'm working a 96 Sububurban 5.7 dual A/C right now and found that it had a bad low pressure switch at accumulator. Didn't realize how many different switches they use so just put it on the counter at my local store and we found it. Dang New England doesn't stock A/C parts near me so I'll have to wait. It had enough static pressure that it it should have worked and did with a jump at low switch so for now that's what it's getting then make sure the charge is right.

If at 75F or better you car should not be cycling or not much. If you know it's never been touched at that age a boost may be all you need as I believe thay all leak a little. Check all connections for oil and you know you have something to fix. As said before careful NOT to overcharge. Good luck, we are watching and you should consider a real set of gauges which are available here. T

Just wanted to post a follow up that I finally got my AC problem fixed...ended up taking to a local mechanic. Turned out it was a faulty valve ($8 part) on the high pressure side. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't know what it is called. He only charged me $80 to replace the valve and recharge my system...I wish I could have figured out the problem on my own, but was very happy because I still felt like I got a good deal on the repair. As a side note he said he had replaced the same part on a yukon the previous day, so apparently it is a common problem.

Certainly remember a place that plays fair with you. Sounds real fair to me. T
