I've had rthe car for at least 7 years and other then the first year maybe when I did notice the fan running....I've have never since that time heard or seen it run, but the a/c was flawless. I had heard that the fan was needed in stop and go traffic where the motion of the car was not adequate enough to force air through to cool the system. Apparently there is a check valve inside the accumulator to prevent any loss.
