the A/C in my 1993 honda civic dx 1.5L hatchback stopped working awhile ago and I have decided to try
and fix it with no luck.
I put it on cool, put it on 1-4 setting, and hit the ac button...but nothing but outside temp. air comes in. In the past when it worked there was
a distinct sound of the fan and unit kicking on and I could hear the car 'sucking' in more air. Does not happen anymore. I checked and the ac fan does not come on when I hit the ac button, only the light on the button.
I'm not sure about the refrigerant levels. All the fuses and relays are working.
If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

ahunt; I'm not an A/C guy. Hopefully someone else will jump in, here. But...look to see if the A/C compressor is engaging when you turn it on. There is a low pressure switch that will not allow the compressor to engage if the freon level is low.

65 or better % of system problems are lack of refrigerant due to a leak. A simple static pressure like checking air pressure in a tire would be helpful for starters. If no adequate pressure compressor won't come on and fans for condenser won't either.
OK: If low on change (possibly still R-12 now restricted) than let's find where the leak is or go on from there if you are up to it,

Ok, that's part of what I wanted to know. The whole compressor could shut down due to lack of freon? I'll go ahead and buy a r-134a recharge kit from Wal-mart and see what happens. I might need to get the oil too?

93 Civics are OE with R-12 (Freon) not available without EPA cert which you can get if you wish. Nothing at Wally World will do.
What you need is to rent (free) gauges to fit and take a pressure reading. Static pressure not unlike taking tire pressure - engine off should be about what the temp is in Fahrenheit as the pressure is in PSI. If lower the system has problems and we can go from there,

A/C is not for the faint of heart - big bucks in equipment and tons to know or you are fooling yourself!

ahunt; Tom is correct. If it's low on refrigerant, it has a leak. Period. Get those pressure readings for him before wasting money by putting in refrigerant (that it may or may not need) that will just leak out. Also, you don't want a can of freon blowing up in your hand if you hook it up incorrectly. Can ruin your whole day.

I guess I'm going to wait until I can get in touch with someone who has the gauges so I can find out more. Wal-mart has the r-12 to r-134a packages with the freon, oil, stop leak, and all the stuff I will need for $35. My uncle is in the heating and cooling business so if I can ever get a hold of him I'm sure he will have what I need to get to the source of the problem.

I would get a hold of your uncle 1st before your buy that kit (junk) at Wal-Mart..
