I have replaced the thermostat and the radiator cap so far. The temp gauge climbs to the hills to hot but no heat comes out...this was before the changes of thermostat and radiator cap. Since I changed those both to new parts I get "some heat but not much at all. I did notice the fan behind the radiator is NOT running. Could that be the problem???? I am not a electrical person at all and was wondering if anyone could tell me if thats the problem before I call around to have one installed.

The fan for the radiator alone should not be prohibiting heater from working - at least until an overheat situation. When cold enough out the radiator fan may rarely come on or not at all so for now that's not conclusive alone.

If the engine is spiking temp and truely is accurate (may need to test underhood) you would expect fan to come on but with both problems and your choice of word (minimum) heat suggests system is clogged and a good flushing would be the first action I would suggest. If lots of corrosion is evident the impellers of water pump may also be a fault,

Both the lower and upper hoses have heat in them so would flushing help? I am not a motor guru and live on a tight budget. What would you consider I do starting with the cheapest expense?

With proper flow the lower hose should be markedly colder than the top hose as evidence that radiator is working. Both could get hot if engine is boiling hot or if water pump is in fact not creating a strong directional flow. I find that rare but it's been reported several times here - none ever seen by myself!

A good flush should at least show good flow thru parts. I think heater core is more apt to catch junk faster than the radiator but both could be marginal as well as junk inside water jackets of the engine. Messy job but is really called for right now.

Try to stick with the 50/50 mix near universally suggested for anti-freeze yeilding protection to -34F. Stronger isn't helpful for most,

The top hose gets hot and the lower hose gets warm...I guess saying hot earlier was incorrect. I will try the flushing process this week and will let you know what I find in those results. Thanks Tom!
