I have an '85 IROC and the A/C compressor won't engage. There's refrigerant - R12 in it. Is this usually a case of a bad pressure switch or a bad clutch. The car has 52K miles on it. If it's the clutch, how do I go about testing it? Is there a seperate fuse for the A/C compressor? The A/C, heater, defroster fan works so I'm wondering if there's a seperate fuse for the compressor clutch. Or possibly a fusable link? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks..cyborgjoe...Smile

The are dozens or reasons for a clutch not to engage. The most common is being low on refrigerant. The first thing you need to do is put a set of professional gauges on it and determine if it has sufficient pressure to engage the clutch to determine whether you have a gas problem or an electrical problem.

If static pressure is close to temp F it should at least cycle.

Check for power to clutch. If yes and not engaging tap on head of it - if empowered it probably will engage - be careful doing that.

Guessing but if clutch gap is too much it won't always work even when empowered.

Still guessing - if empowered and not engaging take a standard biz card to check gap. .020 is about the spec. If biz card folded will fit in the gap it's too much! You can rent the tool free to fix that from AutoZone like places with 100% deposit.

Even at the low miles it's possible??
