2015 Chevy Silverado 5.3 loud ticking/knocking sound behind glove box Sign In

Hey guys,
So I have a 2015 Silverado 5.3L Z71. It has about 165k miles. Just recently it started making a loud ticking / knocking noise, from what sounds like behind the glove box. I have videos but I didn't see the option to post. The noise starts when its in V4 and stops about 1 second before the dash shows it switching to V8. I have heard people say its a lifter and others say the noise is too loud to be a lifter and that it is an actuator for the a/c system. I currently have it at a certified Chevy shop but it has been over a week and they have not been able to Diagnose. Any information you may have is probably more than I have at the moment. Thanks in advances.

Arggh! It's a "Certified Chevy Shop" now can't find it nor have a clue??
Limits what we can do if in person can't.

Suggests they have zero codes or are unable? Ask.
You hunch was mine could be an actuator for air ducts in dash you'd probably find out modes don't all work at your request choices heat, defog etc.

If only when it changes and not sitting still if the shop doesn't drive it with a person to check while in real motion that's what I'd be doing put a hand on the one if need be feel it.

Best I can do if you need to make suggestions to a shop it needs another shop,

Tom
PS: On loading stuff to show I doubt we need it and a hassle for many.
Also when you see (if so) > Gateway Time-out < it went thru. Back up and check. Flaw here.......

You have a stripped out air door actuator in the AC system. You will have to determine which one it is and replace it. You can probably determine which one by changing different settings in the AC and see which one triggers the noise. In that area it could be the recirculation door (max AC) or a temp control blend door.

In that location it's most likely the temp actuator

So the truck switching from v4 to v8 is just a coincidence or are they linked? You are the second person that has said this and it makes since except for the v4/v8 part? I'm not questioning your knowledge I just don't understand that part.

No correlation at all. It's just the timing happens to be the same.

OK Mattluck: That's two of us with same hunch or experienced just that.
Ball in your court now. Do want to take that on or at least ask the shop if they can't even hear it at all?
On that point, they may (just went thru this) have a policy or 'not allowed to drive customers vehicles!" Offer to drive it yourself a maybe if that's so.
Was ticked had one of my own getting an alignment I don't own a 1/2 mil. buck machine so pay for those. Asked as it involved XYZ not this topic they understood would or could fool them please drive it to make sure it's right. NO, they can't and that's final!
A bit frustrating. It worked for my case but know what limits they had to know for sure LUCK was on OUR side they say bring it back and back - IS A ROYAL PAIN free or not.
Talk to your shop don't tell them what's wrong nobody can be 100% certain of anything.

End all is that item would do the noise one (not many my way) was obnoxious like you said found and fixed by me verified it was indeed not changing modes ahead + noise helped a bit,

You don't have to drive anything to test this. You can do it sitting in Park. Just remove the glove box, locate the actuator and hold your fingers on it while you change the temperature reading. You will feel the gear skipping in the actuator.

Thanks for the info. I have talked to the shop. They still hadn't diagnosed it as of today and were talking to G.M. I did suggest they check the actuators. We will see what happens.

OK: That is or was not the way things should work but may fix it? Shop(s) hurt for help in many around me the trade is lacking new and serious techs/mechanics. Hope that triggers a fix not backfire on you I can't know each scene or the snags involved to make this one problem so difficult,
Tom

There are 4 actuators: LH blender, RH blender, mode, and fresh air. Try to determine which one is by moving the corresponding selectors. If the ticking occurs when you turn on/off the truck, chances are is the fresh air actuator.
