Hello,
hopefully someone can make sense of this for me. 2010 Impreza 2.5i with 73k miles. It will almost stall when idling with the AC running. If you turn the AC off, it idles just fine. If you turn the AC on, the compressor clutch engages, system blows cold air, idle seems fine, no odd noises, etc.... but (and here is the odd part) as soon as the compressor turns off and the clutch disengages, the car idle drags immediately and almost stalls. I would think if the compressor was seizing up, it would do it with the clutch engaged, not after it disengages?.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is just the clutch going bad? TIA for any input.

This actually has nothing to do with your AC. It is normal for the compressor to add additional load to the engine and the Idle Control valve is supposed to smoothly compensate the idle up of down.
Try this
First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system (very important)
. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Thanks for the reply!
I don't believe I have any vacuum leaks, but I'll check. I'll also clean the throttle body tomorrow morning. I don't believe this year Impreza has an IAC as it's drive by wire, but the throttle body could be the issue. I'll report back after I get it cleaned up.

That's true. Just make sure it's not getting any unmetered air from anywhere.
