I have a 2008 Kia Rondo. EXV6 model. I have noticed that whenever I switch on the defrost vents, the AC light comes on. I have taken it to the dealer, and they told me that it's supposed to do that, to dry the air and prevent windows fogging up inside. I've never had a vehicle do that before, and don't really like the idea of the ac always running like that, unless I manually turn it off.

My question, then, is this: Were they being honest with me, and this is supposed to happen, or do they just not want to fix a problem?

Any thoughts, advice or comments would be appreciated...

Thanks.

Yes, they were 100% correct. Most all vehicles now run the A/C compressor during defrost and many of them run it all the time now. It makes a big difference in defrost for removing moisture from the air. That is one of the byproducts of A/C.

I don't know this vehicle at all but Hammer is 100% correct about most vehicles will enable A/C when defrost is requested or even if a mix of defrost and some other outlet is chosen. It CAN help remove moisture from the heated air to aid in defogging/defrosting the windows.

It may even light but not actually run the compressor - it depends as there's really only a short window of opportunity for the A/C to help temp associated as it won't come on for real at about 35F (guess) as refrigerant doesn't do it's thing properly at low temps and there are fail safes to shut down the actual compressor when too cold or low pressures are noted. Light probably just stays on either way.

It also serves to excercise the compressor in off season. There's a lot of heat built up under a hood even on Winter days so if you have asked for defrost it will kick on for a bit and lets the oils move thru the system which is good for it even when very cold out. If folks didn't give it some excercise on purpose there would be more compressor failures or earlier anyway.

It's probably NOT broken and NOT something to fix. My guess is just that's the way that car did it. If you don't need defrost after a while you really should choose floor settings for cold weather - heat rises and there should still be a trickle of heated air for windshield the perhaps side windows.

Personally I don't like the A/C coming on for a defog request but it's just me. On certain days at certain temps it cools the windshield to the point of fogging it up as the cold glass will make condensation so I wish it wouldn't do that!

More: I wouldn't try to defeat that as an idea as it's there to help YOU and the compressor,

T
