Hi, I have a 2005 chevy Tahoe Z71. It has dual air controls. Last night was our first frost. The heater works great but the defroster vents do not put out any air. I felt a teeny bit of air coming from the center vent. None out of the left or right vent.

Is this to say you only get airflow out the floor ducts and not even panel vents? That has to be a diverter door not moving and the cause could be either an actuator that turns them isn't operating upon request or the control head is sending wrong information. More likely an actuator motor,

No, it flows from all the front panels great. Only the defrost has no air coming from it.

Hmmm - usually vehicles in general default to defrost only with a fault? If you can get panel and floor then I'm good and confused. Have to admit I retired before there were many left/right ZONE vehicles which is just adding insult to already difficult HVAC box and fine it kind of silly that people can't push a vent closed or crack a window to adjust if need be. Geez - I have a 4,000 sq ft house with ONE zone and no problems!

All this is diverter doors (flaps) electrically actuated to move to adjust temp request, fresh air or recirculate and where the air will come out. So it either a door stuck, actuator failed, or the controls is sending the wrong signal to tell them what to do. Defroster ducts are #1 in my book. Where I am you simply couldn't use the vehicle if you couldn't defrost/de-ice the windshield. Defogging an issue too of course.

You could try to look for the actuators as best you can and see if they move but they are going to be hard to get a view of.

If another tech here doesn't know which is the more likely area to pursue chasing down than feel free to come to an A/C only site with a lot of GM specialists @

Again - I'm surprised it's panel only or panel and floor ducts if it will do that which will matter for the diagnosis. If it's stuck with panel only I'm guessing that the control head is sending the wrong signal for your request and that' s not conclusive,

Well perhaps it's my total lack of experience with this too. It even has a separate defogger. It didn't frost over again last night for me to experiment with. I'll play around with it and see what I can find out. Thanks for your help.

Till diagnosed I suggest getting some Rain-X anti fog for inside window and the yellow non evaporating strong windshield washer fluid and a spray bottle if needed. NEVER USE HOT WATER! Well not unless you want a new windshield!

I owned a car that didn't have windshield washers from factory (ancient history a '61 Olds F-85 w no options) and carried a spray bottle, would reach out the window and spray it or have to pull over - laugh. I was able to install washers on that.

This can be costly or difficult to fix so you want to be as sure as possible. It's hard to be conclusive as to exactly what without some testing and check things out for this. Good luck with the fix,

T
