2004 Dodge Stratus A/C blowing hot at idle Sign In

2004
Dodge Stratus
2.4 SOHC
127,000 miles

First post on the forum so I will describe my problem as well as I can.

First of all I have only owned the car for about 6 months. When I bought it the A/C worked well all the time, no matter what the engine speed was. About two months ago I noticed the LED light on the A/C switch did not light up anymore when you turn the system on. Soon after that the A/C began to blow hot air at idle or at low RPM's(under 2000). Anything above 2000 RPM's and the air cools just fine.

My first step to fix the problem was to make sure the fans were operating correctly, and they are. Today I changed the expansion valve and recharged the system. Still no luck. The compressor is turning on and off properly(even at idle) so I am lost and need help! Thanks

Hope you charged it properly. What are the pressures at idle and raised idle and at what temps? See if it will cool if you mist the condenser with water at low RPM and raised RPM? but right now I'm thinking the compressor is weak.

Indicator light - dunno. If compressor engages then it may have just burned out??

What are your system pressures?

Thanks for the replies. I charged it properly with the A/C machine we have at work. I didnt pay attention to the pressures that were displayed when I was charging it. The machine is automatic so I just punched in the amount of gas it required and didnt pay attention to what the display showed. I will try and get it hooked back up soon and check the pressures.

I tried misting the condensor with water and it still blew hot air.

I only suggested the misting condenser as it is far more effective than plain airflow. Pressures now should help lead to what is wrong. This stuff ain't all fun and games sometime and this could be one,
